Ideally I'd like to get up and walk around my ship, FPS styleĪs the active HUD/menu system effectively replaces the non-functional cockpit displays, I would like to see the menu "skinned", e.g. I see what Bernt was saying about interior modelling. The "Out of Ship Experience" is a bit odd, but does give a better view. I thought the cockpits were a loss, so I tried the X3 mod and realised that actually they were a bit of a pain, and removed them again. So basically the decision was made to save money, but with a little spin that becomes "best choice for the game" I read that as "take the easier/quicker" option, thus spending time elsewhere. We truly believe that this combined with the fact that you now have a whole new HUD system full of really functional overlays and not just a lot of blinking lights basically giving no info at all, IS the best choice for the game. These ships don't have a cozy feeling but a better view Wink The cockpit position now is truly matching the ship and in many cases shows you many elements of the ship around you (granted however there are also ships where the cockpit is very exposed to the front so even when turning around you dont see the geometry of the ship itself. The wings will be there and they will look a lot more detailed then ever before. One of the people in this thread pointed out that what he will miss is the cozy feeling of having the wings of his ship next to him! Well that's exactly what you will NOT be misisng. So we decided for Option 3: Make ships a lot more detailed than ever before and put the outer camera SO CLOSE on the hull that you get the feeling of actually being inside the ship too. Option 2: Do it like X2 and sacrifice the realism of having a truly matching geometry in every ship. Option 1: Spend an awful lot of time making specialised inner geometry for each of the ships in the game? That would definitely have meant a lot fewer ships The inner structure of cockpits could never really fit into all the different ships we had. Now the porblem with that second layer was always that it didnt really fit into the ships geometry, because we had more than 70 ships but only 5 or so different cockpits (and really only two good looking ones). In that camera you see your own ships hull minus the center part oft the ship (for example the wings of your ship) and in the second layer you see a 3D geometry of panels and instruments which mostly don't suit any purpose. One was a camera looking right out of the real geometry of your ship. In X2 you basically had two views layered on top of one another. What we do NOT have anymore is a 3D cockpit overlay. Playing from inside that cockpit still gives you the impression of being located at that position. Each shíp has at least one (many have several) cockpit location defined on their hull somewhere. But I think some of you are getting this the wrong way: Of course the game still features the cockpit perspective. I didnt read this whole thread but I can imagine that quite a few people are protesting because the game will not have cockpits. We were all a bit busy the last few days here making one master after another, but I just wanted to give you some kind of official statement on cockpits or the lack of them.
